Holistic Pupil Development (SMSC)

We develop students spiritually, morally, socially, and culturally (SMSC) through a combination of sport, structured reflection, and Christian values-based learning. Pupils are given regular opportunities to explore and apply values such as respect, perseverance, teamwork, forgiveness, and compassion within physical activities and team-based challenges. Reflection time encourages them to think about their actions, relationships, and personal growth, while also considering the impact they have on others. Through collaborative sport and discussion, pupils build communication skills, empathy, and a sense of responsibility. Christian values underpin the programme, helping pupils develop a stronger sense of purpose, integrity, and community both within school and beyond.

Project Touchline supports pupils’ spiritual development through reflection on feelings, values, beliefs, and experiences, grounded in Christian values such as respect, perseverance, teamwork, trust, forgiveness, and love. Pupils share how they live these values in sport and daily life, linking faith with practice. Spiritual growth is nurtured through collective worship, prayer clubs, reflective discussion, and faith-inspired activities, including links with churches and homes. Pupils are encouraged to consider the impact of their actions, developing empathy, fairness, and moral responsibility. Through ongoing reflection and inclusive practice, they grow in compassion, integrity, and purpose within a supportive community.

Project Touchline supports pupils’ moral development by helping them understand right and wrong and the impact of their actions on others. Through team activities and leadership challenges rooted in sport, pupils apply Christian values such as respect, perseverance, teamwork, forgiveness, and love in real situations, supporting ethical decision-making. They explore themes of fairness, injustice, courage, and responsibility, reflecting on issues such as selfishness and disrespect in school and beyond. Pupils consider the consequences of individual and group behaviour, developing empathy, integrity, and a commitment to acting justly. Ongoing reflection through worship, discussion, and sport-based learning strengthens moral responsibility within an inclusive, values-driven environment.

Project Touchline fosters pupils’ strong social skills by emphasising the importance of effective teamwork and collaboration. The programme’s core focus on teamwork encourages active cooperation. Its broader activities provide abundant opportunities for pupils to tackle shared tasks and challenges together. Through engaging play and sport-based contexts, pupils practise a wide range of social skills. They learn to cooperate, share ideas, listen respectfully, and resolve disagreements constructively as they pursue common goals. This approach builds positive relationships, mutual respect, and confidence in social interactions. As a result, it contributes significantly to pupils’ holistic development.

Project Touchline supports pupils’ personal development through sport and PE rooted in Christian values. It builds character, confidence, resilience, independence, and emotional literacy while promoting respect, perseverance, teamwork, trust, forgiveness, and love. Pupils apply these values in inclusive activities, developing communication, empathy, and emotional regulation. Through teamwork and challenges, they learn to reflect, show integrity, and cooperate effectively. The programme also fosters leadership, responsibility, and service, encouraging awareness of the wider school, church, and community. Pupils are supported to understand democracy and individual liberty through discussion and reflection. Overall, it helps them celebrate individuality, manage success and disappointment, and grow as respectful, responsible, and active citizens.

Project Touchline enhances pupils’ cultural understanding by allowing them to represent different countries in sport-based activities that reflect the diversity of Britain and the wider world. Pupils engage with varied religious, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, developing respect, curiosity, openness, tolerance, and a global outlook. Through team activities and discussion, they explore how sport unites cultures through shared rules and values. Drawing on the Olympic Games, pupils learn about fair competition and the celebration of national identity, heritage, and diversity, reinforcing equality for all. Reflection through worship, prayer, and discussion deepens empathy and respectful relationships. Overall, the programme helps pupils become responsible citizens who value diversity, promote cooperation, and contribute positively to an inclusive society rooted in Christian values.

In England, Project Touchline supports schools in meeting these expectations by delivering a programme that strengthens pupils’ personal development, including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC), alongside an understanding of Christian values and their relevance in contemporary British society. Ofsted evaluates a school’s overall effectiveness through the quality of education it provides, including how well leaders design an ambitious curriculum that equips all pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital needed to succeed in life.
